Karakuri is not so bad after all

I have played Karakuri for awhile and after that I played Karakuri Machina Plants thinking it was better, and then I played Six Samurai ^^ (It was after Storm of Ragnarok was release). After Komachi 224 Ninishi was release in Extreme Victory I kept on playing Karakuri Machina Plant but not for tournaments. I was thinking "as long as nobody proves to me that Karakuri can make a apparition in a Top 16 of something, I won't play it for tournaments." So now is the time, Karakuri just lost in the Top 4 of the last YCS (YCS Kansas City) and one other lost in the Top 16.

There is the decklist of the Karakuri player who made it to Top 4:

Derek Rouse - Karakuri

Monster: 20
3 Karakuri Komachi mdl 224 "Ninishi"
3 Karakuri Merchant mdl 177 "Inashichi"
3 Karakuri Ninja mdl 919 "Kuick"
2 Karakuri Soldier mdl 236 "Nisamu"
2 Genex Neutron
2 Thunder King Rai-Oh
2 Cyber Dragon
1 Karakuri Strategist mdl 248 "Nishipachi"
1 Karakuri Watchdog mdl 313 "Saizan"
1 Gorz the Emissary of Darkness

Spell: 11
2 Smashing Ground
2 Mystical Space Typhoon
2 Pot of Duality
1 Heavy Storm
1 Book of Moon
1 Monster Reborn
1 Mind Control
1 Dark Hole

Trap: 9
2 Solemn Warning
2 Bottomless Trap Hole
1 Trap Dustshoot
1 Solemn Judgment
1 Mirror Force
1 Torrential Tribute
1 Compulsory Evacuation Device

Extra Deck : 15
2 Karakuri Steel Shogun mdl 00X "Bureido"
2 Karakuri Shogun mdl 00 "Burei"
1 Chimeratech Fortress Dragon
1 Ally of Justice Catastor
1 Naturia Beast
1 Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier
1 Naturia Barkion
1 Naturia Landoise
1 Black Rose Dragon
1 Stardust Dragon
1 Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier
1 Number 17: Leviathan Dragon
1 Number 39: Utopia

Side Deck : 15
2 Chain Disappearance
2 Debunk
2 Dust Tornado
2 Kycoo the Ghost Destroyer
2 Dimensional Fissure
2 Smashing Horn
1 Mystical Space Typhoon
1 System Down
1 Shadow-Imprisoning Mirror

There are some questionable choices such as:
Why Smashing Ground ? the deck can summon Synchro monsters with 2600 ATK or 2800 ATK, so for what reason he would need a card to destroy opponent's monsters? Maybe because the deck can not take down a Black Luster Soldier, or a Kristya, or a Vanity's Fiend. this deck don't use tokens or Tengus, so Enemy Controler can not be a good choice in here. And with Smashing Ground you can easily destroy hight ATK Monsters like Scrap Dragon, Trishula, Grapha, Hyperion, Gorz.

I don't understand why there is 2 Thunder Kings Rai-Oh. Did Thunder King became a must-be-played card? Does everyone have to put at least two copies of it in every deck?

And there is Genex Neutron, a very good card that fits very well in the deck, but the thing is, Derek Rouse cheated a little with this card in the Top 8, let me show you how:
Rouse drew Genex Neutron next turn! He activated Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Gonzales’s face-down Mirror Force and then Normal Summoned Genex Neutron. Rouse Tuned his Komachi with Genex Neutron to Summon Naturia Landoise, and then attacked directly to deal 2350 points of damage to Gonzalez.

Naturia Landoise needs a EARTH Tuner and 1 or more EARTH non-Tuner to be summon, and Genex Neutron is LIGHT.

I saw that the Karakuri Player who made it to the top 8 played Karakuri Muso mdl 818 "Haipa" not a bad choice because Muso 818 Haipa helps in situation like, when you summoned your Bureido, you can summon  Strategist 248 Nishipachi to draw a card or you can summon Muso 818 Haipa to attack an then draw a card.

And I see that Derek did not use Limiter Removal. I think it's a great card, but I don't why he did not use it.

I won't talk about the side deck because everyone got his own Side deck choices and there are plenty.

In conclusion, I won't say I will from now on played Karakuri, but I will play it for the non-tourney duels for sure. ^^

  1. You seem to have missed the fact that 3 other Karakuri decks have made top-32 of the previous 2 YCSs by more reputable players. It has already found a place as a top tier deck this format long before this tournament.

The first deck is a more aggressive version which tries to make large swings at the opponent's lifepoints. That is why it includes Haipa.

As for Thunder King, it supports the aggressiveness of the deck and is really strong against most all of the top decks right now. It really is included in most decks.

Smashing Ground is used not only to get rid of big threats like synchros, Krystia, or something, but also to get rid of opposing Thunder Kings which can cause problems for this deck. Smashing Ground can be used to force Evolzar Lagia's effect as well.

Limiter Removal is strong, but inconsistent. You have to have it at just the right time or it's useless. And if you use it to go for game, and fail, it can cost you the game. It is really unneeded, a "win more" card.

Karakuri's are definitely a competitive deck right now.
